RIGHT TO RESIST CROWN
NOMINATION OF BISHOPS IN KING’S LETTER PROPOSAL IN ENGLAND (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Tuesday. The Bishops’ Committee, in a report to the Church Assembly, proposes that the dean and chapter of a cathedral should have the ~ight to refuse to elect as the bishop the person named in the King’s Letter, giving their reasons in writing, although it may be open to the Crown to override their decision. At present it is a criminal effenee, punishable by imprisonment, to refuse to elect the person nominated. The committee points out that in practice the bishop is nominated by the Prime Minister, who sometimes is not a member of the Church of England, and the present system does not afford adequate safeguards against ill-considered appointments. The committee also proposes that before the Prime Minister advises the Crown he should consult a committee, which should include the two Archbishops and five members of the Church Assembly, but without derogating from their Prime Minister’s ultimate responsibility. The report will be considered at the next meeting of the Church Assembly.
