DASHED TO DEATH
MOTOR-CYCLIST THROWN 18 FEET COLLISION WITH POLE (From Our Own Correspondent) WHAKATANE, Today. A carpenter, Mr William Robert Baker, aged 48 years, was killed as a result of a fall from a motorcycle this morning. Mr. Baker was riding along Domain Road toward town when a motorlorry came out from a side street. Apparently when Baker saw the lorry he endeavoured to decrease his speed, and the cycle skidded in loose metal and dashed into a telegraph pole on the street corner. The cycle remained against the pole with the front wheel badly buckled, while Baker was thrown a distance, of ISft, landing on his head. He received terrible injuries, and death must have been almost instantaneous. He leaves a widow and two daughters.
