STRAND

“IN OLD ARIZONA” The Fox movietone synchronisation equipment was moved out" into the Utah Hills and then to the Mojave Desert, producing: an exciting drama, to the accompaniment of braying mules and hoof beats on the Mesa. Based on O. Henry’s story, “A Caballero's Way,” ‘‘ln Old Arizona,” now at the Strand Theatre, is a thrilling story of the South-west. The cast is headed by Warner Baxter, Edmund Bo we and Dorothy Burgess, who makes her first apearance on the screen, all of whom are heard as well as seen in this picture. There are no sub-titles in the picture, the voice completely supplanting the written word. Warner Baxter, who came to the screen after many years as a leading player on the stage, where his fine voice was one of his principal assets, plays the role of the Cisco Kid, a notorious and daring bandit. His complete disregard for the law results in Sergeant Mickey Dunn, a young cavalryman, being sent to effect his capture. He persuades the bandit's sweetheart. Tonia Maria, to betray the bandit’s whereabouts, and thus becomes involved in a series of exciting adventures. The programme of all-talkie supporting subjects includes an amusing vaudeville item by Beatrice Billie, the unconventional English comedienne, the Royal Hawaiian Singers in “Honolulu Melodies,” and a Fox Movietone News of events of the day in talk and sound.
