BOGUS CHEQUES
OPERATED NON-EXISTENT ACCOUNT DRIVER FOR SENTENCE Three months ago when he passed over two cheques drawn on a bank where he had no account, Claude Boland Aitken paved the way for the charges of false pretences, on which he was convicted this morning. Aitken admitted at tlie Police Court that on February 8 he had obtained benzine and oil valued at £1 11s 9d from Edgar Charles Pearce, and that four days later he had got further supplies valued at £2 13s Gd, both lots being paid for by valueless cheques. According to Chief-Detective Hammond, Aitken had bought a secondhand car, passing in his old vehicle in part pay merit. . He had paid an instalment of the balance by cheque, receiving- a certain amount of petrol and oil iii addition. The exploit had j been repeated shortly afterwards, j Both cheques were valueless. Mr. C. A. Snedden appeared for Aitken, and said that the man had not wished to defraud anybody. He j had expected that finance would be given to assist him in running his j service car business between Roto-, rua and Auckland. The arrangement j had fallen through. Aitken was remanded for sentence so that the probation officer could pre-: pare a report on him. Mr. Snedden’s application for bail J was refused.
