"Noon Call."

STEADY trading was recorded at the opening calls for the week on ’Change this morning.

FLUCTUATIONS Price movements. shown by sales over the past 24 hours when compared with the price at the time of the previous recorded sale, incl ude: Ohinemuri Mining, fall of 3d. Business at this morning's early call —On ’Change: Westport-Stockton fpref.), 4s 6d. Reported: Auckland Hospital Board, 52 per cent., 1945, £IOO 17s 6d. Actual trading in the banking and Insurance groups is restricted to within a very small compass. The market is quiet and showing little strength. Commercials of Australia are steady at last week’s closing easier levels, sellers at 30s 3d finding ■support at 30s. A.P.A. Insurance scrip is firm, with a middle price of 10s 3d. Tn the coal group Westport-Stock-ton preference shares were dealt with this morning in the call room at 4s fid. Although the ordinaries have

been quietly active during the period, this is the first reported sale of the preference scrip for several months. The market for Pukemiros at the moment is weak, sellers at 64s 6d being supported by buyers at 60s. New Zealand Breweries showed increased strength this morning, buyers moving up to 63s 3d without attracting sellers. Sales were made in the South on Saturday at that figure. Steady buyers of Innes preference scrip fail to attract sellers on to the open market. A quiet tone is registered in mining groups. Waihis are slightlv_ easier, with buyers offering 13s 6d and sellers at 13s 9d. Ohinemuris dropped 3d to see sales at 8s 2d and more available at that price. Business at this morning’s early call. —Reported; Auckland Electric Power Board. 1945, 5£ per cent.. £IOO 17s 6d. On ’Change: Westpo.rt-Stock-ton (pref.), 4s 6d. BETTER BUTTER MARKET

BRITISH DEMAND IMPROVES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Saturday. The butter trade experienced a welcome improvement in demand this week. Business during the last few days has been quite active. There are hopes that this state of affairs will be maintained for some time, for neither stocks here nor the quantities afloat are heavy, and a continuance of the cold dry weather In England, Ireland and on the Continent is retarding grass production. Consequently the output of butter is considerably smaller than is usual at this time of the year.

BRITISH APPLE MARKET

SIGNS OF IMPROVEMENT NEW ZEALAND SUPPLIES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Saturday. The apple trade is showing signs of improvement here and at Hamburg, as American supplies are beginning to decrease and there is a prospect of Australian and New Zealand fruit meeting with a bettez’ demand. There' are still large quantities arriving at British ports, the total for the week ending May 7 from Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa aggregating 295,000 cases. After that, supplies will be smaller, only 146,000 oases being due for the week ending May 14. The quality of the apples now coming from Australia and New Zealand is considerably better than the first arrivals, particularly as regards colour. This ought to have a good effect on trade. A most satisfactory feature of the fruit trade is the strong demand for pears. Australia and New Zealand have the market practically to themselves, for the South African sunnlies are rapidly diminishing. Consequently there is keen competition for all good peal’s, and high prices are being made. The Barrabool landed her 13,55 S packages of Western Australian fruit in excellent condition. One leading importer describes this cargo as one of the best ho has seen from Australia. Some fetched as much as 20s to 22s 6d for halt-cases. Other sorts sold correspondingly well. This shipment ought to give a profitable return to exporters.

DONAGHY’S ROPE AND TWINE COMPANY

Press Association DUNEDIN To-day. The directors cf Donaghy's Rope and Twine. Company, Ltd., recommend a final dividend of Is 3d a. share, making 10 per cent, for the year.
