“THRILLS OF MOUNTAINEERING” ALPINE CLUB’S LECTURE “Tho Thrills of Mountaineering - ,” a lecture given in the Unity Hall by Professor R. M. Algie, president of the Auckland branch of the Alpine Sports Club, on Saturday evening, told of fascinating climbs in the Southern Alps Professor Algi© is one of the most experienced mountaineers in New Zealand, and every year he pays a visit to the Mount Cook Hermitage. His lecture, which dealt with a trip made to the Murchison Range in 1925 was illustrated with some excellent slides, which added to the interest of those present. Professor Algie mentioned on Saturday evening that the occasion was also the inaugural meeting of the Auckland branch of the Alpine Sports Club, which had been formed with the idea of cultivating the athletic, literary, and artistic sides of mountaineering. Similar clubs were in existence in several parts of the Dominion, said Professor Algie, who expressed the hope that eventually they would all be combined, and thus present a strong front to the Government when the question of monetary assistance arose. On the trip to the Murchison Range, Professor Algie was accompanied by Mrs. Algie and two guides, Messrs. A. Brustad and K. Grinling. The party left the Hermitage, travelled over the Tasman Glacier, and reached the summit of the Tasman saddle on the third day. From there, three previously unclimbed peaks were scaled, and named after the members of'the party. Professor Algie also told of his ascent of the Minaret Peaks. Mr. W. Laird Thomson, secretary of the club, thanked Professor Algie on behalf of the members, and said that arrangements were being made for parties to visit the National Park in June, and Mount Cook in August. Mr. J. H. Rose paid a tribute to Professor Aigie’s work in encouraging mountaineering in New Zealand, and said that the club was fortunate in having a practical climber as president of the Hub.
