“LENIENCY USELESS”

20-YEAR OLD YOUTH’S LENGTHY LIST THREE YEARS’ HARD LABOUR “Your long list of previous convictions proves that leniency is useless in your case,” said Mr. Justice Blair in sentencing John iward Calvert to three years’ hard labour at the Supreme Court this morning. Calvert came up for sentence on a charge of false pretences at Te Puke, where he gained possession of a Ford car, by asserting that he was the representative of Builders’ Supplies, Ltd. Accused had nothing to say. His list showed ten previous convictions at Whangarei, Auckland and Wanganui. “You are young—only 20 years of age,” said his Honour. “However, you have an unenviable record. You have already served two sentences of reformative detention and you were on probation for two years. Leniency is no good to you. You will be sentenced to three years' imprisonment with hard labour.”
