OLD NEWSPAPERS
PAPER FOUND REPORTING COMING OF ARMADA DISCOVERY IN HOUSE WALL The discovery of a bundle of old newspapers and broadsheets, one of which announced the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587, was described at Willesden Police Court. A woman asked the magistrate if she could claim the newspapers which she said had been found in the wall of a cottage she had sold and which was being demolished to make room for a garage. She added that she had been told the newspapers were worth thousands of pounds. Asked by the magistrate to describe them, she said they included a copy of the “English Mercury,” of July 23, 15SS, giving a description of the coming of the Armada; the “Weekly News” (1606), with an account of the execution of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators; and the "London Gazette” (1666), with an account of the Fire of London. “I suppose there is not one giving the arrival of William the Conqueror,” remarked the clerk. The magistrate said it was not a case for a police court summons.
