R.M.S. AORANGI LOSES A MASCOT

PATS who go to sea should learn to swim.

This improvised proverb suited the occasion this morning when the R.M.M.S. Aorangi lost a mascot and the Waitemata claimed a bedraggled victim. “Cat overboard!” was the cry shortly after the liner had anchored for medical inspection. Distinguished by a striking coat of tawny fur the animal was the pet of the crew and a general favourite. It was being fondled by someone when it took fright, leapt over the rail, and splashed into the sea. A boatload of waiting journalists embarked on a belated rescue effort, and the cat was secured, but all nine lives were forfeit.
