PAKURANGA HUNT

OFFICIAL OPENING MEET GOVERNOR-GENERAL PRESENT Over 250 members and friends of the Pakuranga Hunt attended the breakfast in the cast Tamaki Hall on Saturday on the occasion of the crub’s official opening meet. Ideal weather prevailed and a splendid afternoon’s sport was enjoyed by over 100 followers of the hounds. The Governor-General. Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson and party were present. In welcoming the visitors, Mr. EL. Bullock-Webster, master of the hunt, said there was every prospect of one of the best seasons which the club ,had had for years. It even promised to eclipse the record of last season. The pack was in great form, and, with the inclusion of a number of young hounds, everything augured well from that quarter. Applications had been made for permission to hunt at Weymouth and Opaheke. and they had not been refused in a single instance. The farmers concerned were inexperienced as far as hunting was concerned, and they were looking forward eagerly to the first meet, so it behoved the members to play the game as usual and thereby extend the good impressions already created. SPORTING FARMERS “The hunt is dependent on the farming community and the debt owed to the farmers is indeed hard to repay,” he said. “The pack has been hunting over some of the same country for the past 60 years. This proves what a good sporting lot the farmers are.” Lord Waleran had promised to send three hounds from England on his return. This was much appreciated. In conclusion he said that the occasion was the last on which their Excellencies would attend the opening meet, and he expressed the feeling of the hunt when he said they could indeed be missed. He wished them a safe return to the Homeland. Cheers were given for the farmers over whose property hunting was permitted. The pack then moved off to Mr. Fred Wright’s farm, where the hounds were thrown off in promising country.
