DIRECT STEAMER SERVICE

SOUTH ISLAND TO MELBOURNE Press Association WELLINGTON, Friday. Speaking of the cabled statement by Sir Walter Lee, Tasmanian Minister of Lands, Sir Joseph Ward says: “We have been moving for some time to establish a service of two steamers to run regularly between the South Island and Melbourne and propose to invite tenders, but certain negotiations have been going on that have not finally matured. The Government is prepared to give a subsidy. I am of the opinion that, in due course, wc will have the service. “Naturally we were anxious to have Hobart included, and discussed the question as to whether the Commonwealth authorities would remove the impost of what I understand to be ten shillings a passenger between Hobart and Melbourne. The Government is in earnest in its desire to have a permanent service established. Some 40 years ago we maintained a regular weekly service of several steamers, and in the Southern portion of New Zealand there is a fixed determination on the part of the people to have a suitable service inaugurated. The Government will do its part in the matter of a subsidy.”
