“A LAZY LOAFER”
MAORI’S SERIOUS OFFENCE TWO YEARS’ HARD LABOUR % For committing an offence... involving a girl over the age c.f 12 and under the age of 16, Kahe Matepo, a Maori, of Whakatane, was sentenced to two years’ hard labour by Mr. Justice Kennedy at the Supreme Court this mornMatepo, who spoke through an interpreter, said the girl had told him she was of age. As the girl was only 14 years of age, and in view of the evidence given in the case, said his Honour, it seemed clear there was a certain amount of pressure from the prisoner, who was much older than the girl. “You are a lazy loafer in the pa, and in the last 21 years you have been no less than 28 times before the Court for drunkenness, breaches cf prohibition order, theft and- perjury,” said his Honour.
