BID FOR LIBERTY

ESCAPE FROM WAIKERIA FEW HOURS FREEDOM Yesterday Bartholomew Mcllroy, aged 22, made his second bid for liberty since he was arrested in Auckland in February. He made his escape from the Waikeria prison camp yesterday but was recaptured later in the day, after being away only a few hours. On February 13 Mcllroy eluded his police escort and jumped from the window of a house in Ponsonby Road, where he had been taken to collect his clothes and effects. He was captured some hours later on that occasion. Mcllroy was sentenced at the Auckland Supreme Court on March 17 to four years’ reformative detention by Mr. Justice Blair on six charges of making false documents and three charges of theft involving a sum of over £6OO.
