MANUREWA TRAFFIC

QUESTION OF CONTROL The Manurewa Town Board held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the chairman, Mr. Geo. Gallaher, presiding. Other members were present. Regarding traffic control, Mr. Fawcett stated that a certain amount of confusion was apparent as a result of the Highways Board’s action in appointing a traffic inspector to control the Great South Road; the new inspector’s duties entailed an unnecessary duplication of the work done by the local bodies’ inspector. Mr. Fawcett thought that the Highways Board should have notified the suburban bodies if it were dissatisfied with the present control of traffic. Mr. F. Whyte considered that the Highways Board should not have interfered, and as no reply had been received to the Town Board’s request for a definition of the new inspector’s operations, he moved that the Highways Board be asked to remove their inspector. After further discussion the motion lapsed for want of a seconder, it being decided to await a reply from the Highways Board. Advice was received from the Auckland Museum Institute that nominations close on April 12 for the election of three representatives of subscribing local bodies. After some discussion it was left to the chairman to communicate with surrounding local bodies with a view to nominating a representative. Mr. W. Ferguson gave notice of his intention to move at the board’s next meeting that the present arrangement of supervision by two separate Works Committees be abolished in favour of the establishment of one Works Committee.
