NAVY’S GAS-CHAMBER
PROPOSAL TO GO AHEAD The proposal to erect a gas- ! chamber- at Oevonport will go I ahead in all probability, as the naval authorities have set their mind oh having the equipment. The Devonport Borough protested against the erecting of the chamber until further examination had been made of the proposal, the first intimation of which was given the public when an application was made to the Harbour Board, as the authority owning the land at the Naval Base, for permission to erect the chamber. Devonport’s attitude was supported by many letters to the Press. The borough was Informed that It might seek the opinion of the Health Department, which in turn delayed taking up an attitude until it had communicated with the naval gas expert. The naval authorities have informed the Minister of Defence that the gas to be used Iu the chamber will be innocuous, and while serving the purpose of testing masks and training men will not be a menace to resi--dents even if it escaped, which was quite unlikely. This opinion is to be sent to the Devonport Borough Council.
