Will Wellington Club be Suspended ?

SPORTS BODIES ROW CENTRE UP IN ARMS Anticipations that a first-class row was brewing in Wellington amateur athletic circles were more than realised at the centre meeting on Monday night, when a resolution was moved that the Wellington Club, one of the oldest and most successful sports bodies in New Zealand, be suspended for three months fo.r holding a meeting at the Basin Reserve on Saturday last “in direct opposition to the centre’s ruling.” The mover of the resolution, Mr. D. Paris, said it appeared to him that the centre’s ruling had been '‘deliberately flouted.” No finality was reached, says the “Dominion,” and after a heated discussion, in which a delegate was called upon to apologise for using improper language, the question was deferred for further consideration at a special meeting to be held on January 24. NO INTENTION OF FLOUTING Mr. Rose said the officers of the Wellington Club had been to the forefront in amateur athletics for a great many years, and he would be sorry to see such a drastic motion passed. He hoped the resolution would not be carried, as he did not think the Wellington Club had any intention of flouting the centre’s decision. He moved that the centre express its strongest disapproval of the action of the Wellington Club in bolding a meeting contrary to a decision arrived at by the centre. Mr. Peterson seconded the amendment. A FIRM STAND Mr. Paris: I feel that amendment is letting them off lightly. If this centre is going to accept the floating of its ruling, what is to hinder other clubs doing the same? It is not sufficient to tell them that they have been naughty boys. Some punishment should be meted out. Mr. Kitto: My club wanted me to say to the centre that they ran this meeting in all sincerity and that they had no desire to flout the ruling of the centre. I am sorry that Mr. Paris should turn down his club mates who elevated him to his present position. Mr. Paris: I challenge that, Mr. Chair. I did as much for the Wellington Club while I was a member of it as the Wellington Club did for me. Mr. Kitto: I am not saying anything about that, Mr. Paris. Mr. Paris: Well, I am. The Chairman: Order! It seems to me that the club deserves a very much harder rap over the knuckles than Mr. Rose proposes to give them. I don’t want to be too drastic. I am extremely sorry this position has arisen, but I am in full agreement with those who say that we cannot allow our decisions to be flouted. The meeting was advertised as a club meeting. . . . Mr. W. Ingram: I did not say it was an open meeting. The Chairman: I don’t care what you say, Mr. Ingram. The club deserves at least as much as suspension. I would like to see the whole club suspended for one month. The members of the club elect their committee, and they are surely bound by the action of their executive. The amendment was lost by a large majority. WHAT PERIOD OF SUSPENSION? Speaking to the motion, Mr. Hill said that if the officials of the Wellington Club were suspended for three months it would be tantamount to killing the cltib, and that was not desirable. He moved that the suspension be for a period of two weeks. Mr. J. S. Bright: 1 have fought Mr. Kitto many times, but I know his work, and I would advise you to think very hard before you pass that motion. Voices: Hear, hear. Mr. Kitto: “I am quite prepared to take my share of the blame, if there is any blame. It seems a crime, however, to suspend the club without giving it the right to defend itself.” He described the motion as the most drastic resolution ever moved by an amateur sports body in New Zealand. After further discussion, it was decided that the question be deferred for consideration at a special meeting to be held on March 24. Before the discussion closed a delegate stated that Mr. had declared: “You knew you were well guilty.” The member concerned admitted using the language and apologised.
