EASILY CAPTURED
TEN MINUTES’ LIBERTY .
BREAK FROM MT. EDEN GAOL Two prisoners who made a break for liberty from the quarry at Mount Eden Gaol soon after 4.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon were captured again within 10 minutes. They were seen scaling up the side o£ the quarry', in an effort to getawjiy and hide in the cavities in the hillside on property owned by the Colonial Ammunition Company, but warders immediately gave chase and caught the men before they could get away. The escapees were John Charles Colcord, who was sentenced at Auckland. and Charles Frederick Murphy, a Maori, who had been sent to Mount laden from Wellington. Just about 4.30 d'clock, When Tim prisoners employed in the quarry stopped work for the day, Murphy and. Colcord were seen to dash away from the main group and scale up the quarry. , . .4 Tho officer in charge blew nis whistle and warders set off in pursuit of the two men, whose flight was a short one. ;. They reached the top -of the quarry tind jumped a wire fence into the area owned by the Colonial Ammunition Company, where there are large cavities in the hillside and a quantity of tall grass and undergrowth. However, the prisoners were not able to hide before the warders were on them. The warders never lost sight of the two men, who were recaptured r;isily and marched back to their cells.
