DEVELOPMENT POLICY
ASSISTANCE FOR WORKERS UNITED PARTY TO VOTE WITH LABOUR “The present Government is a government of the people by the wealthy and for the wealthy,” said Mr. W. C. Hewitt, United Party candidate for Auckland West, speaking in Eden Terrace last evening. “Since the old Liberal Government went out oC power,” he continued, ••practically nothing: of any benefit to the working man has gone on the Statute Book. The Government has lost the confidence of the business people in the Dominion and. in spite o*' the favourable balance of oversea trade, the country’s prosperity ajid contentment is growing less.” Mr. Hewitt then described his party’s policy with regard to the great .L T 0.000,000 loan and outlined the uses to which the money would be put—the completion of railways, land settlement and various public works. 'Wow if this country is worth anything at all it is worth developing.” he said, “but the money used in this development must pay interest. We propose to complete the many halffinished public works and convert them in the shortest possible time into Interest-bearing businesses.” The candidate said that his party rlul not propose to allow any more immigration until all the present unemployed had been absorbed. Then, he saw no, reason why a suitably-trained agricultural class should not be introduced by slow degrees. He advocated the decentralisation of the control of education and the reform of the electoral system, saying that his party would introduce “preferential” voting. In answer to a question Mr. Hewitt >aicl that the United Party was prepared to vote with the Labour Party on , a no-confidence motion to put the Reform Government out of office. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried enthusiastically at the close of the address.
