ALONG THE COAST

CAMPAIGN REVIEWED WANGANUI AND TARANAKI (Special to THE HUN) WANGANUI, Sunday. Considerable apathy has marked the election campaign so far. There bas been a complete absence of real figfr both in regard to candidates and th licensing issue. In the last few days there has. however, been a quicken' ing of interest. Candidates are taking a survey along the coastal zone. , It would appear as if Mr. S. G. Smith. United candidate, will defeat Mr. C. E. Bellringer, New Plymouth, though the Labour candidate may upset the calculation. Mr. C. AWilkinson's fight against the Hon-0. J. Hawken*. Minister of Agricu!tui%. developed to such an extent that, barring accidents. Mr. Wilkins ol3 should secure the seat. Mr. W. J. Poison has put plenty o* vim into his contest, but it is doubtful if ho will succeed. At the sam‘ time, he is assured of a strong farmers vote. Mr. H. G. Dickie’s return for Pate* is assured. This is the only Reform seat in Taranaki that can confidently be reckoned really secure. Mr. W. A. Veitch’s seat does not appear to be jeopardised, though may be that Mr. W. J. Rogers, tn® Labour candidate, will run a second. Mr. Rogers is very popuh* in Wanganui. At the same time. will have to improve on his figure at the last election by about 3.030 get home. This is hardly possible. MrN. G. Lewis, the Reform candidate, t* not really taken seriously by capable of judging the position Having come from Wellington to contest the seat, he has not altogether with the approval of a good many those who previously voted Reform- A triangular contest, of course, is capable of giving surprises, though odds in thise case are strongly 13 favour of the sitting member Mr. W. S. Glenn is having seriouopposition in Mr- J. T. Hogan. * former representative for WangaflULast night. Mr. Hogan had the big£®f and most enthusiastic political ing ever held in Wanganui East. ■ In this area Mr. Hogan is very poP l *’ lar. If he secures, as is anticiP a f®“* big majority there, together wlt *\ * majority on Durie Hill, he will ru> Air. Glenn very close. Mr.- Glenn »•*: score well in the farming districts may possibly be returned by- a sina majority. T c Air. John Cobbe is givipg Mr. J* ; Elliott and his supporters a _ anxious time in Oroua. Air. chairman of directors of the Feu Freezing Works, and chairman °' Wellington Harbour Board. He . big following in Feilding itselfmore than likely he will wrest tm from Reform. Air. J. A. A* B -® certainty for Palmerston North.
