OVER THE RADIO
AUCKLAND HEARS ARMISTICE, DAY IN LONDON BAND AND HYMNS Many New Zealanders heard Londor: celebrate Armistice Das*. This was made possible by the splendid relays of Dominion stations, perhaps the best under the circumstances ever made here, and certainly a striking advance on that of last year, when station 3Y A alone was on the air. i When station SSW, at Chelmsford. England, was first picked up shortly before 11 p.m., on Sunday, a service at the Cenotaph was in progress. Shouted orders to the troops could be heard, then came band music and the bymn, “O God Our Help in Ages Past,” sung by the crowd. Then silence fell, broken only by short bursts of static as London observed the two-minute silence. Following the Lord’s Prayer and the benediction came the “Last Post,” echoing clearly through every country of the world, then the Xational Cithern and ‘"rtiis is station SSW.
Chelmsford, England. Our relay ifl concluded/ Station IT A was again on the air at 2.30 a.m., when conditions were even better than earlier. Almost every word of the service in Trafalgar Square wa® heard clearly until the station closed down at 8.45 a.m. Unfortunately the two sessions later at 7.55 and 9.5, when there were relay® from St. Martin’s-in-the-Ftelds and the Albert Hall, were not heard in New Zealand. The splendid relay by ITA proved the superiority of the new screenedgrid type of set. the relay being taken, by permission of the Mayor, from the Devonport Fire Station. Station 2YA Wellington was also on the air, but its transmission was not so clear.
