DRAINAGE WORK
CLEARING DOMINION ROAD MOUNT EDEN’S SCHEME At last evening’s meeting of the Mount- Eden Borough Council, presided., over by the Mayor, Mr. E. H. Potter, a report was received from the engineer on a proposal to eliminate, by .means of drains, troubles caused by flooding in the dominion * Road district. According to the report the proposed trunk drain would start at the main drain in Parrish Road and would continue through private property parallel with the borough boundary, intersecting onrits way, Elizabeth Street, Paice Avenue, King Edward Street and Burnley Terrace and from there along Dominion Jtoad to Valley Road.. It was pointed out ; that there was no natural outlet for the water that collected in the hollow part of Milton Road, other than the low-lying section between*, Grange Road and Milton Road, where a ! serious nuisance was caused. A drain here would be an absolute necessity. The whole work., which will ' probably cost about £IO,OOO will be done by means of tenders. In the meantime the engineer’s report was referred to the works committee. Two objections were received at the meeting to the opening of the Mount Eden swimming baths between 10 -a.m. and noon on Sunday mornings. Betters •were received from the Rev. E. N. Goring and from the Rev. A. S. Wilson asking the council to rescind the decision made at its last meeting, on the ground that Sunday observance would be weakened. After some discussion, it was decided to fix S a.m. to 10 a.m. as the hours for mixed bathing on Sundays. A request was received from the Society for the Protection of Women and -Children, for permission, to hold a street collection on Friday, November 30. It was decided (hat permission should be given, the MaLyor saying that peoplecould always refuse to give anything if they wished. Mr. E. H. Potter, the Mayor, was nominated as a member of the Auckland Transport Board. Both Mount Albert and Newmarket have the right to nominate representatives and the three bodies combined will have two representatives. It is hoped, however, to come to an agreement so that an election will be unnecessary.
