THE BOXING RING

Notes From Far and Near '

By

"LEFT COUNTER”

The purses pf the Von Reedon-T'KicL” Socks. bout* which terminated, so /Sensationally, have, been given to the Lord Mayor’s Metropolitan Hospital Funds- *; * * ' .* ..' * With the' impending visit to Australia qf. Fidel La Barba, Stadiums Ltd. are desirous of obtaining Suitable ~ opponents, and with this in view .are negotiating for a visit from Teddy Baldock, the English bantam-weight; It is now reported from America that after two contests Tom . Heeney is to retire, but if the New Zealander ; is. in any way successful in the elimination bouts for the world’s title, and there is no reason why hq should, not bp, the report can be taken \yith a pincli of .Salt. Wrestling Boom Ended. Tho wrestling season in Australia appears to have ended and a large contingent of English and American boxers are on their way to the Commonwealth. Nevertheless it will take some time, for boxing to again take, its place after the series of wrestling championship contests which have been so popular. * “Hop” Harry Still Fighting With 40 years behind him “Hop” Harry Stone has returned to Australia to carry on fighting and he has Challenged Jack Carroll, for the welterweight championship of Australia, supporting his claim jvith. a , £IOO sidestake. When most pugilists are enjoy ing well-earned rests from the ring Stone is seeking to add to his total of about 600 contests. - Taylor Unlucky “Taylor was unlucky and I am not satisfied with the decision. For 14 rounds of the fight he did. all the forcing,” says Mr. Eugene Donovan, the wellknown Auckland trainer, in commenting- on the bout between his charge and Green, the Australian fly-Weight champion, at . Napier last week. Tne judges disagreed and the referee awarded, the decision to Green. However, Taylor has now proved that he is the equal* of the fly-weights in Australia: He wants to meet Green in a return match. Waihi Closes Down Owing to lack of interest the Yv’aihi Boxing Association has decided to wind up its affairs. It is always a pity to see an association going out of business and the cause lies mainly in bigpurses. The stronger associations are able to import boxers and give large purses, and second and third-rate borers. sometimes consider that they are also worth big amounts, but there are some who will fight for what they are w orth. In Waihi's case, . however, 'it appears that the lack, of interest was in the association itself. Jamito's Decline Much water has passed under the j bridges since Salvino Jamito left these shores and the little Filipino has been j m South America, Panama and the j United States, w'here he is how living. In his last contest he suffered a knockout at the hands of a fourth -rater, proving conclusively that the once famous iittie fighter has about reached the end of his tether as far as boxing is concerned. Jamito is getting on in years ?•?+! despite his many contests he has little to show for his active life. Money always burned a hole in his pocket and now late in life he has not a great j aeai of this world’s goods. Like many j another good fighter he will probably continue as a preliminary boxer until the promoters refuse to let him carry on any longer.

Jjm Broadfoot and Harry.',. Causey are matched to meet at Palmerston North on Boxing Night, December 26. The middle-weight title which Casey holds will be in dispute.

After his contest, with Leckie, Billy Melton packed his traps and sailed for Sydney, considering that he would do better in Australia now the wrestling bopm has finished.

Bruno Frattini, the Italian middleweight wh'o was deefated by Laqhie McDonald in Sydney, is now in England. He was defeated recently by. Jack Hood, welter-weight champion of England, on a technical knock-out. :

American reports state that Tex Rickard is booming Knute Hansen as the nexj heavy-weight champion; Phil Scott’s American mentor is trying to get a return bout with Hansen in order that the Englishman might try to wipe out the defeat he suffered when last the pair m'et.

Tommy Fairhall, the Australian wdlter-weight, was scheduled to meet Harry Casey at Wellington on November 26. but latest advice is that 1 it'will be Trowern who faces the Australian on- that date. 4 * McAllister in New Zealand Billy McAllister, bantam-weight champion of Australia, has cabled his willingness to com© to New Zealand to fight any boxer in his class. ; Bantams are few and far betweeriVin this country, but Tommy Griffiths can make the Bst 61b limit. Though really a flyweight Frank Taylor would/- probably be willing Australian. Leckie’s Movements It was originally reported that after with Radford, Johnny Eeckie was to sail for America, but it now transpires that the champion has • not decided his futur© movements. In the meantime he is matched to fight Harry of England, at Palmerston North on November 28. If experience, couth ts for anything Why brow should make a good fight of it, but there are -no#;many who would be willing to back his;*chances against Leckie.

Auckland's Next Bout "* A great contest is promised when Tommy Mclnnes and Harms meet in Auckland on December 3. It is not yet definitely known when the pair will arrive in Auckland,: but they should be here very soon. Mclnnes needs no introduction, but Harms will be making his first appearance in this country. He is stated to. be a rattling good fighter who contests his bouts all the ; way. The pair have met once previously, Harms gaining the decision on points. That should be sufficient recommendation for anybody. Title Bout in France/ -

It is possible that Izzy Swartz, flyweight champion of the world, will meet Emile Pladner, the French champion. A purse o£ £2,000 has been offered by - a,*. promoter and if Swartz bout will probablv be tought #bout the beginning of December-Ulf the bout materialises it should give a good indication of the chances of Johnny Hill, the English champion, who recently defeated "Newsboy” Brown, recognised m soTne-^-?mr^s-'ef-'ttre- 1 States as the world’s title-holder. Hill has defeated Pladner on two or three occasions but in each case the bout has been close.
