Mr. P. H. Vyner, of Sydney, arrived on a holiday visit to New Zealand by the Maheno this morning.

Mr. H. L. Tapley, M.P. for Dunedin North, returned yesterday by the Madura from San Francisco.

Dr and Mrs. A. S. Brewis, of Hamilton, returned to Auckland to-day by the Maheno after a tour round New Guinea

Mr. W. M. Commons and Miss D. r/ Commons returned to Auckland today by the Maheno after spending a holiday in Australia.

Mr. J. T. D. Lloyd and Mrs. Lloyd, of* Auckland, returned to-day from an extended tour through India, China, japan and the East.

Mr. Thomas C. Wasson, Vice-Consul at* Melbourne for the United States of America, arrived in Auckland by the Maheno this morning. He is on a holiday visit to the Dominion.

Mr. John Farrell, Auckland manager for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., returned to Auckland this morning after a tour with the Leon Gordon company.

Mr. E. W. Sharp, New Zealand manager for Mauri Bros, and Thomson, Ltd., Sydney, returned from a visit to Australia by the Maheno this morning.

Mr. C. J. Lawford, who has been on* an extended tour of England, Europe and the United States, returned to Auckland to-day by the Maheno from Sydney. He was accompanied by his sister, Miss Jean Lawford.

Mr. C. W. Abel, of Abel, Smeeton, Ltd., who has been on a tour of England and America, returned to Auckland to-day by the Maheno. He was accompanied by Mrs. Abel.

Bishop Liston, Dr. Buxton. Monsignor Cahill, V.G., and Monsignor Ormotfd left for Wellington by the Limited last evening, en route to Sydney, where they will attend the Eucharistic Congress.

Mr. A. E. Moore, manager of the Yorkshire Insurance Company, returned to Auckland this morning by the Limited from Wellington. He has been on a tour of the South Sea Islands.

Mr. Charles Rhodes, Mr. John Dearsley, Mr. H. Goldie, and Mr. J. F. Shanly, Auckland delegates to the International Rotary Conference in Japan, will leave by the Niagara to-day. They will go to Honolulu, and from there to Tokio.

Sir George Elliot has been elected chairman of directors of the Auckland Gas Company, in succession to Mr. J. H. Upton, who has resigned. Mr. Upton has served on the board since 1892.

Mr. Stuart F. Doyle, managing director of Union Theatres Ltd., Australia, was among the passengers on the Niagara yesterday. To-day he continued on to Honolulu where he intends spending a holiday.

The Hon. A. F. Boyd, of Suva, who has been visiting Auckland, left by the Niagara this morning. Mr. Boyd represented Fiji as its commissioner at the N.Z. and South Seas Exhibition of 1925-26.

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Burt and their two daughters leave Dunedin to-day for an extended trip to Sydney and other parts of Australia. They will be absent from New Zealand from six to nine months, and will then return to Dunedin to settle.

Bishop J. M. Steward, who retired recently from the diocese of Melanesia, will sail for England by tho Remuera on September 15. He will go South on Thursday to pay a round of visits, and will return to Auckland on September 8.

Dr. A. W. Bickerton is to have the title of professor emeritus conferred upon him. This decision was reached yesterday by the board of governors of Canterbury College, where for 30 years, from 1873 to 1903, Dr. Bickerton was professor of chemistry and physics. Dr. Bickerton, who is 87 years of age, now resides in England.

The Rev. W. T. Whitley, the wellknown Baptist leader, arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Makura. lie had been attending the World Baptist Congress at Toronto and remained^ behind to edit the congress volume. He will spend a month in New Zealand before crossing to Australia, where he was for 10 years the principal of the Victorian Baptist College in ]\telbourne. After visiting Napier, Gisborne and Rotorua, he will deliver a course of lectures on church history to the students of the Baptist College in the main centres. HOTEL REGISTER Grand. —Mr. H.
