ARROGANT EX-KAISER
DUTCH PAPER HITS OUT * HOSPITALITY ABUSED GOVERNMENT SHOULD ACT (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, Sunday. It is not without significance that on the eve of the historic ceremony in Paris of the. .signing of the pact to outlaw war the ex-Kaiser, who is universally admitted as having been responsible for the greatest war in history, should spring into the limelight. This he has done as a result of his arrogant behaviour in Holland, the country which has hospitably sheltered him since his downfall. The Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf publishes to-day a trenchant editorial article. This demands that the Dutch Government shall once and for all end the intrigues of Wilhelm, which it asserts are constantly being hatched in Holland with an eye to eventual development elsewhere in Europe. If dethroned monarehs go their way calmly and with dignity, the writer remarks, the most staunch Republicans will appreciate their good taste. But when amid such din they continue tinkering on the road from which, for good reasons, they have been chased away, all sympathy with them is forfeited and turns to anger and to sharp watchfulness. This applies to the ex-Kaiser. For nearly 10 years he has been enjoying the right of asylum in this country. It appears as though the epoch-making events which led to his residence at
Doom have made no impression on this conceited and dangerous man. The question is one of personal vanity. It becomes the urgent duty of the Netherlands Government to see that the hospitality granted to this person, who still has the bad taste to style himself “Imperial Royal Majesty,” and to issue cards so printed for circulation at home and abroad, shall not be abused. The Government must act immediately to prevent plots being hatched in this country.
