"MID-CANTERBURY ONLY”
MR. NOSWORTHY EXPLAINS WORD OMITTED FROM CABLE (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The trouble concerning the MidCanterbury seat and the Hon. W. Noscandidature has now been settled. The whole misunderstanding v * as caused by the omission of the w °rd “only” from the Minister’s cableS ran * to Mr. R. Galbraith, Mayor of Ashburton. After writing to Mr. Galbraith, intimating that the question of whether ,*?• Jones or himself should stand for ajid-Canterbury would be settled by r} r * Coates and the Reform eexcq.tive, Nosworthy astounded the Reform supporters with a cable from Canada SpS that he would be standing for m-Canterbury, thus appearing to go °n his word. • Galbraith received the followcablegram from Mr. Nosworthy to‘The word 'only’ was omitted •nf 11 ? cable, which should read: ©finitely a candidate for Midu lswrbury only,* meaning that 1
am not available for any ’other electorate.’* Mr. Galbraith understands the message to indicate that Mr. Nosworthy leaves the decision to the Prime Minister and the executive. The misunderstanding undoubtedly has arisen from the fact that Reform supporters in the Hurunui electorate passed a resolution inviting Mr. Coates to make strong representations on their behalf to Mr. Nosworthy, with the idea of persuading him to offer himself as a candidate for Hurunui. The Prime Minister communicated with Mr. Nosworthy, advising him of the wishes of the Hurunui electors, and it seems that in reply to this communication the Minister forwarded the cable which appeared to be a contradiction of his previous letter to Mr. Galbraith.
