Younc, on Saturday, one in support of a request for a grant for cleaning and straightening the Komakarau Strega at Gordonton, and the other in opposition to the proposal. Members of the Hillside Drainage Board and other settlers said the lar.4 in the viciinty of Gordonton was deteriorating into swamp through th« silting up of the Kounakarau Streac., the level of which had risen 7ft ir. recent years. The Minister was askw: to lay before the Government a request for a grant of £2,500 for the improvement of 10 miles of the stream up to Taylor's Bridge. As an alteraitive, a subsidy of £2 for £1 was sought. Mr. Young said he had hoped that all the boards having jurisdiction in the watershed served by the Komakarau Stream would unite to make an app> cation to Parliament for the constitution of one large district and one board, but in the absence of the requisite unity he would do all he could in tlio meantime to obtain a measure of relief. In the evening. Mr. W. N. Speedy and Mr. M. Finlay, of Puketaha, waiteii on Mr. Young, and questioned the wisdom of the Government in giving ary piecemeal assistance to any of the governing bodies dealing with land drainage in the watershed covering th* Eureka. Hillside. Woodland*. Taahei and Uapota drainage districts, and the Mangawharo River districu The deputation said any work dem* in the lower reaches of the Komakarau would not be of benefit to settlers at Puketaha. and that any scheme of improvement would not give general satisfaction unless extended right up to Puketaha. The deputation advocated the amalgamation of the drainage boards and the adoption of the Government’s comprehensive schema for the drainage of the whole of th# Woodlands Swamp, Gordonton settlers’ request was opposed by th* deputation* In reply, Mr. Young outlined tfei position as it had been explained, ard demonstrated to him that day. and *ak he did not feel disposed to hinder th* Gordonton settlers in their effort* to find a partial solution of the difficult* WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE— The following vesesls ‘are expected be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations to-night:— Auckland.—Tutanekai.
