VALUE OF A WIFE
JURY SAYS £350 HUSBAND GETS DIVORCE What is a wife worth? That was what a jury had to decide in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, when George Cendo Yelchich (Mr. Mason) sought divorce from Mary Yelchich. who did not defend the case. The ground of the petition was adultery. Leslie Brown, farmer, of Waiuku, was cited co-respondent. The petitioner sought damages from this man. Yelchich, a Dalmatian, said the parties were married in April. 1923. at Waiuku. Two children came. Petitioner brought witnesses of the adultery and claimed £SOO damages. Without retiring the jury found that the respondent and co-respondent had been guilty of adultery. In reporting an assessment of £350 damages,, the foreman said the jury would like to add a rider that this money should be allocated for the benefit of the children.
Mr. Justice Reed granted a decree nisi and gave judgment far £ 350, to be paid within 14 days. Costs were alA> given against the co-respondent.
