MAORI RUGBY

RATANA CUP MATCH MANIAPOTO BEATS TARANAKI (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE KCITI. Wednesday. The largest attendance of spectators this season at the Te Kuiti Domain to-day witnessed the match between Maniapoto-Tainui and Taranaki, for the Katana Cup. Over a hundred Taranaki supporters accompanied the team to Te Kuiti, and the Maori pa presented an animated appearance during their stay in town. Splendid weather prevailed during the afternoon, and some bright football was witnessed. The teams were fairly evenly matched in the matter of weight, Maniapoto perhaps being slightly the heavier side. Maniapoto, by the aid of its bustling forwards, had the best of the game in the first half, the score at half-time being: Maniapoto 9, Taranaki 0. Shortly after the resumption, Taranaki’s play improved wonderfully, and for a time it had the Maniapoto defence severely taxed, and shortly after opened their scoring with a try. Toward the end of the game Taranaki converted another try, the final scores being: Maniapoto 15, Taranaki S. Scorers for Maniapoto were Kino (2), Bain (1), Jones (2), T. Maata, the Maniapoto captain, being the most outstanding player.
