MORE PURCHASES MADE British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Wednesday. The London Liberal paper, the “Daily Chronicle,” together with the “Sunday News, the Edinburgh “Evening News,” the Yorkshire “Evening News” and the Doncaster “Gazette,” have been purchased by Mr. William Harrison, on behalf of the Inveresk group, from the Daily Chronicle Investment Corporation, Limited. The Marquess of Reading will shortly retire from the chairmanship of the board. The purchased journals will continue their support of the Liberal Party. The Inveresk group have large interests in various periodicals, paper stalls and printing companies.
The “Daily Chronicle’* arose out of the local “Clerkenwell News,” which paper was bought by Mr. Edward Lloyd in 1877 and converted into an “Imperial morning paper on independent Liberal lines.” It supported Mr. Gladstone’s Home Rule Bill in 1893. In 1899, under Mr. H. W., Massingham as editor, it strove for peace and opposed Air. Joseph Chamberlain. The “Chronicle” early gave much space to literature, and in 1891 started a "literary page.” It exposed various frauds, including Louis de Rougemont in 1898. Its editor from 1902 to 1918 was Mr. (pow sir Robert) Donald. In 191 S the United Newspapers, Ltd., with a capital of £2,000,000, acquired the “Daily t nronicle and the other papers in the SToup now sold. The “Sunday News” was formerly caned ‘Lloyd’s Sunday News.” It was in * s * 2 - has a popular appeal, ■ne Edinburgh “Evening News,” a penny daily was established in 1873. It has a circulation of over 100,000 a day.
