WINNING A D.C.M.
REGIMENTAL HISTORY PUBLISHED HEROISM OF MR. J. A. LEE The official history of the Wellington Regiment, which has just been published, contains a reference to Mr. J. A. Lee, M.P. for Auckland Bast, who spent some time on the Western front, and who gained his D.C.M. for gallantry in the field. Mr. Lee is referred to in the following manner by the publication: “Hawke’s Bay Company on the left also had opposition, and that company captured two machine-guns and 40 prisoners. There were many acts of courage by the men of Hawke’s Bay, but one notable feat of gallantry was onfrthe part of Private J. A. Lee. “He tackled single-handed a machine-gun near the Wytchaete Road, and captured the four gunners. Later, when Taranaki Company was checked by an enemy post, Lee. with two of his comrades, worked round behind the enemy and rushed the post, capturing two machine-guns and 40 men, and so enabled our advance to proceed.” It was for this exploit that Mr. gained his decoration.
