HIGHWAYS BOARD REFUSES TO INCREASE SUBSIDY
ROAD MAINTENANCE MANUREWA’S PROBLEM (From Our Own Correspondent) MANUREWA, To-day. The question .of maintaining with permanent material the shoulders on the Great South Road is engaging the attention of the Manurewa Town Board, and a communication was read to the board meeting last evening intimating the dissatisfaction of the Main Highways Board with the present state of the road. In response to the board’s request for an increased subsidy toward the cost of tar-sealing the shoulders, the High--ways Board stated that only ordinary maintenance, 30s and 20s, could- be paid on the work as in the case of scoria or metal. It was decided to write to the Highways Board again, pointing out the impossibility of maintaining the shoulders with scoria or metal, and stressing the need for some permanent work. A communication was read to the board from the Manukau County Council in respect to the proposed conference for a common stock route. The council did not consider that any finality would be reached by such a conference, and it suggested an independent commission. The Auckland City Council advised that the parks committee had decided to make available the services of the city engineer and the superintendent of parks to advise the board on the laying out of the cemetery reserve at Takanini.
Mr. W. Goodger was appointed inspector of noxious weeds, at £3O per annum, plus expenses. Mr. G. Gallaher reported that on a recent morning several residents of the district had been unable to obtain tickets at the local railway station owing to the absence of the porter, who was at the time handling three trains simultaneously. As a result, these residents had been forced to pay a line of sixpence for procuring their tickets on the train. Mr. Gallaher considered that the department was not catering for the public convenience. The board decided to communicate with the department on the question.
