Station Destroyed

FIRE AT MATAROA FAMILY’S HURRIED ESCAPE (Special to THE SUN.) TAIHAPE, To-day. At 3 o'clock this morning the railway station at Mataroa, eight miles north of Taihape, was comsetely destroyed by fire. A grocer’s shop and refreshment rooms owned by Mr. Lamb, which were close to the station, were also destroyed. The fire delayed thg Limited to Wellington for half an hour as the wires controlling the tablet apparatus were interfered with and a pilot guard had to be established. Railway books, the ticket stock, telephones and postal mail were recovered from the blazing station, and the railway business is being carried on to-day in the goods shed. Mr. Lamb and his family, who lived on their premises, lost everything. They escaped from the burning building in their night attire. It is believed that the outbreak started in Mr. Lamb’s bakehouse.
