HAMILTON MAYOR'S CHAIN OF OFFICE
NEW WAIKATO DIGNITY 50 YEARS A BOROUGH (Special to TUB SUN.) HAMILTON, To-day. When welcoming distinguished citizens to Hamilton in future, the Mayor (Mr. J. R. Fow) will don a gold chain of office. This new dignity has been subscribed for by past Mayors and presented to the present holder of the office in honour of the fact that Hamilton has now been constituted a borough for a full half century. A T a civic supper last night in honour of this important milestone in the history of the Waikato centre, the Mayor expressed the hope that Hamilton would soon be a city with a population of 20,000 inhabitants. Associated with him were the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Public Health, and a former Mayor; also Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Coates. Mr. Coates is the oldest surviving ex-Mayor of Hamilton. To each of the old councillors present, or their surviving representatives, Mr. Fow presented a copy of an attractive booklet which the borough has had prepared to mark the occasion. Mr. Coates invested the Mayor with the new chain of office, and congratulated him upon his record of service for the town.
