PADDY'S MARKET
TAUMARUNUI FARMERS' UNION Marked success attended the efforts of the executive of the Tauraarunui district branch of the women’s division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union in the organisation of a “Paddy’s Market,’* conducted in conjunction with the annual Taumarunui ewe fair. There was a plentiful supply of all kinds of saleable commodities, kindly donated by settlers and townspeople, and good business was done all day. Many of the farmers donated a ewe to be specially sold in aid of the branch’s funds, but the financial return from these animals will not be .available for a few days. The president, Mrs. Barker, and committee extend sincere thanks to all who assisted in any way. A. number of competitions were conducted, and resulted as follow: The length of a piece of string was guessed by Mrs. Ryan at 100 inches, and she secured prizes in the form of embroidered mats donated by the Mayoress, Mrs. G. E. Manson. The weight of a fruit cake donated by Mrs. McKay, of Piriaka, was guessed at 51b Soz, by Mrs. Street, Otunui, who secured the cake as prize. The correct number of peas in a bottle was 327, and Mrs. Condon and Miss Joan Skelton, of Taringamotu, both guessed. 301,. securing between them a box of chocolates given by Mrs. Coogan, Taringamotu. Very keen regret is felt throughout the branch at the fact that the secretary, Mrs. R. M. Gardiner, has resigned her position owing to early departure for Samoa. Mrs. Coogan, of Taringamotu, has kindly consented to act as secretary in the meantime.
