NO EVIDENCE OF BETS BOOKMAKING CHARGE FAILS AN ALLEGED DOUBLE Following a retirement of threequarters or an hour, the Jury in the trial of Harry Marks on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. yesterday returned a verdict of not guilty. For the Crown, Mr. Hubble alleged that Marks made bets after he had been convicted of bookmaking in April last, and that he had failed to make a settlement in a double on the Grand National meeting in Christchurch in August. • Mr. Dickson, for the defence, denied that any bets had been made since the conviction, and that the accused therefore could not have laid the double with William Henry Bonner, who, he said, was an agent for Marks prior to his conviction. He considered that the Crown case savoured of collusion. In summing up, Mr. Justice Blair emphasised the point that in all but one instance the only evidence of bets having been made were in the words of Bonner, and in the eyes of the law he was looked upon as an accomplice. The accused was discharged.
