DIRECT CONTRADICTION

ALLEGATIONS BY BIGAMIST DEFENCE BY LEGAL WIFE A direct contradiction to allegations made against the wife of lan Cameron was made in the Supreme Court before Mr. Justice Stringer this morning. Cameron came up for sentence yesterday on a charge of bigamy, and it was then alleged that his legal wife was a woman of ill-repute. The case was adjourned until this morning to allow the prisoner to find sureties. Mr. Paterson, for the prosecution, said that since yesterday he had received conclusive evidence that tie allegations made against prisoner’s legal wife were totally untrue. Prisoner met her when she was 19 years of age, and used to go out with her against her mother’s wishes. When he deserted her some time after the marriage, she went back to her mother and had been living with her, and the allegations that she had been living with other men were untrue.

“I have letters which show that the prisoner was carrying on clandestine meetings with the girl he marr ed after he left his wife,” said Mr. Paterson. “Her mother is a respectable woman and such allegations as ha ve been made are not true. I am prepared to call evidence to that effect.” “I am prepared to call evidence, too,” said J. F. W. Dickson, who is representing the prisoner. His Honour said he would adjourn the case for a fortnight, and he would then decide the questions raised.
