MODERN FIREPLACES
| NEW AND NOVEL DESIGNS ' Fireplaces, whether they are for gas or coal, are put into the wall in an entirely different manner from the old-fashioned affairs. Mantelpieces are conspicuous by their absence in many modern fireplaces, or, if that is considered revolutionary, a small ledge is allowed. The most practical fireplaces are made of tiles, glazed to go with the general scheme of the room. Thqse built for drawing rooms are often quite beautiful in design. Diningrooms are usually catered for with fireplaces of rough red bricks. have everything in common with the old Norman grates, for they are built low and wide, going back well into the wall. A modern touch on one such model was a couple of polished red china gargoyles jutting out at each side as a decorative concession in place of a mantelpiece. Very few modern bedrooms are made with a fireplace at all. An elaborate hot-water system is supposed to offer the required warmth.
