Ir spite of the strong position and favourable prospects of th< London market, there lias not been anvthing in the nature of keen or general buying from he United Kingdom. At against this, 1 owtver, a certain amount of butter business has been done with Canada for shipment to both the East and West Coasts, at prices which for some time have showed a slight rirlng tendency, but there is something in the nature of si lull in the business that wa* being done with Canada. A report furnished to the Minister of Mines, Mr. G. C. Web'ier, by the chief chemist and assayer of the Mines Department for the first time definitely establishes evidence of the discovery cf oil in Vietc ria. It states that boring carried or, by the department ai Lake Bunga, near the entrance to the lake, has prov ed that mineral oil exists there. The value of the oil at present is very small, but from the commercial standpoint tie fact that it exists is of great scientific importance and warrants 1 urther boring in the district.—A. and N.Z.
