NEW REGENT

“JOY AND JAZZ WEEK” “Joy and Jazz Week” at the New Regent Theatre will go down as one of the theatre’s most successful seasons. Since its opening on Friday last, the jolly and wonderfully varied programme has attracted crowded houses and again last evening a packed and delighted audience showed in no mean manner its appreciation of all the good things offered. Paramount’s appropriate picture, “Cabaret,” staring glorious golden Gilda Gray, is one of the most fascinating films of the year. It shows the dancing rage of the world in two roles —one a dancer whose name is on the lips of thousands of night club habitues —the other the sensible girl who fights out her family’s troubles, even to the extent of trying to save her brother, who is wanted by the police for murder. The dramatic atmosphere of the deeper plot is in direct contrast to the tinselled scenes of revelry in one of Broadway’s most famous cabarets, where Gilda performs her exotic dances. Tom Moore plays the part of a detective, and Chester Conklin has a great role as the funny old father of the dancer. Eddie Horton received another ovation last evening at the conclusion of his organ solos, “Honolulu Moon” being a favourite that had to be repeated before the audience was satisfied. “Jazzmania,” with Maurice Guttridge and the New Operatic Orchestra featuring the latest hits on a stage ablaze with colour, was a greater riot than ever, and Tilton and West, “the Joy Boys,” could hear their applause still sounding long after they had left the boards. The whole entertainment proceeds with a snap and an atmosphere of care-free fun that gathers each and all under its spell from the moment the orchestra plays the evening’s introduction. There is still a heavy demand for seats, and as there are but two more nights of this sparkling show left, patrons are advised to reserve without delay.
