FINAL GALLOPS AT WANGANUI

WORK INJTHE RAIN (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, To-day. Conditions were rather unpleasant for training- operations this morning, and steady rain during yesterday soaked the tracks, making them at times nearly two seconds slower than was the case yesterday. 3tost of the winding-up gallops having taken place on Monday and Tuesday, there was nothing of a sensational order. All fast work was done on No. 1 track. A POPULAR DOUBLE Mask and Daraaris were slipped over five furlongs, a distance which they covered in 65 4-ssec, taking 39 for the first three. The former may start favourite in the Marangai Handicap tomorrow. and he has been coupled with Grand Knight for a lot of money. Grand Knight occupied 52sec in covering four furlongs, the initial furlong taking 12 2-ssec, the first quarter 25. and the last quarter was cut out in 27. The imported horse looks as well as ever he did. Nothing else but Grand Knight is wanted in the Flying Handicap. Huikai cut out the first furlong of four in 14. the quarter in 27 2-5, and the full distance in 55 2-5, hitting out freely. Shot Silk was stretched out over two furlongs in 26sec, pulling up over the third furlong for the distance to be covered in 42. Lucky Days, a five-year-old mare by Lucullus —Adoption, was sent over five furlongs, the last three of which occupied 41 2-ssec. The middle furlong took 14sec. A PAPAKURA PAIR Eden Hall and Le Choucas took 13 to run the second furlong of six, the next took 12 2-5, and three were left behind in 39. The time for the last five furlongs was 1.8. Eden Hall looks well, and the stable appears to have a chance of capturing one or two stakes at the meeting. Polydectes took 12sec for the first furlong of four, and 25 1-5 for the first quarter. The full distance was covered in 53 1-5. Degage and Aro de Val went six furlongs, taking 15sec for the first, but brightened up over the next to cover the distance in 27 2-5. The half-mile took 55 1-5, and the six furlongs was covered in lmin 23sec. PROMISING THREE-YEAR-OLD Cione’s mission was six furlongs, which the Catmint filly covered in 1.21. Teri, In the Shade, and David Garrick were associated in an effort over six furlongs. They covered the initial furlong in 14 4-5, and the first quarter in 27 2-5. The three furlongs took 40 2-5, and the half-mile 54, the last two taking 26, and making the time for the journey lmin 22sec. In the Shade is very well, and the Australian bred three-year-old will have something to say in the contest for the Guineas.

Vast Acre had it on Break o’ Day over four furlongs in 52 2-ssec, the first quarter taking 27. Kiosk (J. Barry) and Star Area hopped off at the five furlongs post to cover the initial portion of their journey in 13 4-ssec, the quarter baking 25 1-5, and three 39sec, the time for the full journey being 1.7 4-ssec. BEST OF THE MORNING Great Charter (light-weight up) and Doree (W. H. Jones) set off to cover the initial furlong of five in 12 3-ssec, the quarter in 25, three in 37 2-5, and the full distance in I.s—as good an effort as any of the morning. Bennanee took 13 over the first, 26 over the first two, and 53 fo.r four furlongs, which task the Catmint gelding accomplished pleasingly. Te Monanui and Tresham were associated over a mile. The first quarter took 29 2-5, three furlongs 42 2-5, and four furlongs 55 3-5. The five took 1.9 2-5, six 1.23 1-5, and the full distance 1.51, Te Monanui seeming to finish with plenty of reserve. Among the last to appear were the Fordell horses. Laughing Prince and Avro covered four furlongs in 52 2-5, the former going best. He should be a much improved horse by Saturday. Shining Armour was sent over six furlongs, which he covered in 1.22 2-5, the last four taking 56sec. He may be a hard nut to crack in the Marangai Handicap than some appear to think. Brigadier Bill shaped in good style over six flights of hurdles, rapping a couple of them, however. Atene and R.uby Red went over six fences of the steeplechase course in pleasing style, jumping cleanly. LIKELY TWO-YEAR-OLD

Episode and Freehold (Tamatete's full brother) went a couple of circuits of the hurdle track, sprinting up the straight each time. The latter appears very forward, and may be one of the best youngsters in commission before the season is much older.
