“NOTHING UNDERHAND”

TE WERA LAND PURCHASE MINISTER IS EMPHATIC (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. “I do not mind it being suggested that I have made a mistake, but I resent, and do so strongly, the suggestion that I or the officers of my department have been got at or that the Government has done something that is underhand and that will not bear the fullest investigation.” This statement was made by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, in the House to-day when defending the purchase by the Government of the Te Wera block at Gisborne. The Minister said the allegation had been made that the Government had bought the property from two of its political friends. The vendors of the land were Dr. Chappie and Mr. J. C. Field. Dr. Chappie was a member of the House for a short period, and while lie was there he never supported the Reform Party. As for Mr. Field, unless he supported the present member for Gisborne, the Minister knew for a positive fact that he never supported the members of the Reform Party.
