Turf Notes

"EARLY BIRD"

Cione Impresses Although Cione lost a lot of ground in the Trial Plate at Marton she quickly made it up, and at the end of a couple of furlongs she was in the middle of the field. Cione looks certain to develop into a splendid galloper before she gets beyond her three years. A Trentham Pair Two horses that 11. Lorigan is preparing at Wanganui that show promise are Oratrix (Kilbroney—Oratress) and the two-year-old Royal Duke (Tea Tray—Persis), a half-brother to Tuahine and Lady Lois. Both are well, and with a race or two into them may be ready for backing. Being Looked After The three-year-old Catmint—Queen Boadicea gelding Kahakura is receiving a lot of attention at the hands of O. Norgrove and though he is somewhat on the green side he should not require a great deal of work to strip fit. His dam was got by Demosthenes from Iranui by SoLilt from the Castor mare Tauhei, who claimed Vivandier by Musket as her dam. Showing Promise

Modest Boy was a useful performer last season and more than paid his way. At Ellerslie N. Cunningham is keeping the neat little son of Some Boy 11. moving along in good style and on appearances it looks as if the four-year-old is very near his best form. Should Modest Boy perform creditably again this season it would not occasion any surprise. To Come Back During the past month the hurdler Vice Versa has had several good gallops and with every one he has shown improvement. Should Vice Versa stand up to a solid preparation it is on the cai'ds that he will prove troublesome in hurdling events later on in the season. Vice Versa is now well on in years and though he has not raced for some time there should be hopes for him considering he remains sound. Over the Battens

The six-ycar-old Thurnliam gelding Levenside, who has been galloping well on the tracks at Ellerslie, is to be schooled shortly, in view of hurdle racing. Levenside some time ago was given tuition over the battens and on frequent occasions followed the hounds. If the gelding can jump there should not be anything to stop him making a good hurdler, for he possesses plenty of pace on the flat.

WANGANUI TRIALS

Bank Note was sent over five furlongs. which he covered in good time, though not asked to do his best. Both Star Area and Kiosk were given light tasks, moving freely. ONE FROM MARTON A sprint over the final stages of the second of two rounds was Vast Acre’s task, and the Acre mare impressed as being in readiness for serious tasks. Te Kawana and a companion took 13 2-5 over the first furlong of their task, doing the quarter in 26 1-5, three in 39 2-5, and the half-mile in 53 2-5. Aropeta was sent over five furlongs, which the Cyntoi gelding covered in 1.7 3-5, the first furlong taking 14sec. The time was not impressive, but Aropeta, who was ridden by the Auckland lightweight, W. H. Jones, should do better with the colours up. He has improved out of all knowledge since last season. Alloway, with his usual pilot up, was asked to go six furlongs, which he left behind in 1 min. 19 2-ssec. The first furlong took 13 l-ssec., the quarter 25 4-ssec., three furlongs 38 3-ssec., and the half-mile occupied 52sec. The heavy going at the Marton meeting was certainly not in favour of the Limond gelding, and he should do much better on the dry tracks of his home course.

Anchor (L. G. Morris) accompanied Limosa (D. C. Watts) in a four-fur-long task, which was accomplished in 53sec.. the first quarter taking: 25 4-ssee. and the last quarter 27 l-ssec. The last-named went very well. TO BE KEPT IN MIND Civility was sent half a mile, taking 12 2-osec. for the first furlong, 24 1-5 sec. for the quarter, and 50 4-ssec. for the ful distance, the last three furlongs being covered in 38 3-ssee. She is looking as well as ever she did, and the Elysian mare promises to foot it with the speediest in the land when she steps out later in the spring. Carrig:allen and Town Bird went four furlongs in SOsec., the watch showing 12 2-osec. for the initial furlong, 24see. for the quarter and 26sec. for the final two furlongs. Town Bird should be able to handle the firmer Wanganui going better than he did the Marton mud. and the Archiestown gelding may atone for his defeat on Saturday, for he can clap on the pace when he likes and the conditions suit him. SPEEDY SPRINTER WELL Whenuanui was unaccompanied in a task over five furlongs. He. got to the end of the first furlong in 13 3-ssec.. : taking 25 l-ssee. for the two. 37 3-ssec for the three, and finished up covering the last two in 2 7 4-ssec., to register 1 min. 5 2-ssec. for the journey. The son of Acre —Belle Boyne is very well just now. and may have to be reckoned with when sprint events come up for decision. Olympic. Atene and Franfeldt, engaged at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt

MORE SPEED TESTS YESTERDAY’S GALLOPS ANALYSED (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI. Tuesday. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting will soon be with us, and the presence of the majority of visiting horses at the tracks this morning was evidence, if such were needed, that the opening day is close at hand. There was an attendance of more than the usual number of onlookers when work was started, despite the early hour, and after breakfast the number was considerably increased. There was a slight drizzle about 5 o’clock, which threatened to be unpleasant, but it cleared off a bit before operations commenced. Most of the fast work was done on No. 1 track. This was in good order, though nothing of a sensational nature was registered on it. There must have been nearly seventy horses to use the tracks during the morning, so at times the course presented a very animated appearance. THE EARLY BIRDS The earliest to make use of the facilities for fast work were Covent Garden and Thaw, who covered four furlongs in 50 2-ssec, the first quarter taking 24 2-5. It was a good gallop, the latter being a bit too good when they hopped off, but at the finish the pair were on terms. Thaw claims an engagements in the Seafield Handicap, but Covent Garden is only in the Owen Handicap on Saturday. It is not yet certain whether Covent Garden will be seen out at the meeting. A HOT MAIDEN The Chief Ruler filly, Flying Binge, was associated with Catkin in a spin over half a mile, which they left behind in 52 2-ssec, the last-named doing it easily at the finish. There is no doubt that Catkin will prove a hot proposition in the Maiden, and what beats him will have to cut out a slick six furlongs. Flying Binge is well forward, and may be expected to be with the leaders in the parade on Thursday. Joy King was not asked to stretch out, being content to do four furlongs in 55 2-ssec, a performance he was eager to improve on. He appears among the nominations for the Eclipse Stakes on Saturday, but whether he will be started is not yet definitely ascertained. Joy Bird and Gleninnis went four furlongs together, covering the journey in 53 2-ssec, and Bronstell, accompanied by Wet Paint, went over a similar distance in 53 3-ssee, the last three of which occupied 40sec. COMING TO HAND Lysander, a lightweight up. was sent over live furlongs, the last four in 51 2-ssee, the initial furlong taking 12 2-ssee, making the time for the journey 1.3 3-5. The dashing son of Absurd is not going to let Grand Knight and Pennon have it all their own way in the Eclipse Stakes, and will beat more than beat him in the Flying Handicap to-morrow. There is no doubt as to his being well, and the six furlongs of the big sprint will sharpen him up for Saturday’s battle. Bent and Service, her half-sister, were associated over five furlongs, taking 13 for the first. They covered the quarter in 25 1-5, and the three in 39 1-5, the full distance being left behind in 56sec. Both carried good weigh ts. Pantagruel and a companion took 53 3-5 to run four furlongs, the first quarter taking 25 4-5 and the last 27 4-ssec. VALICARE’S BROTHER Lausanne was sent over half a mile, covering the last three furlongs in 39 l~ssee, A number of others were given serviceable work on the inside tracks, these including Star Stranger, Grand Knight and Damaris. When operations were resumed after the breakfast interval the weather conditions were not too attractive, but the tracks were soon busy, a slight shower having no effect on the state of the ground. The first out were W. H. Dwyer’s team, who were worked on the hurdle track.

on Friday, were associated in a spin over six furlongs. They took 14sec. for the first furlong, 27sec. for the quarter, to get to the end of their task in 1 min. 21 4-ssec.—not a bad performance. though Franfeldt was some lengths to the bad at the finish. Royal Mint and Mint Leaf were sent five furlongs, but were not out to make ; time. Te Monanui was also given strong j pace work. RECOVERING FORM? JTipo was going better than Xastori in a flutter over five furlongs. The first furlong was covered in 1 4 4-ssec., the last four taking 53sec. Hipo is certainly showing a glimpse of j his old form.

Koauau, Modern and Alarm were to have jumped half a dozen flights of hurdles together, but the last-named was late on the scene, and the first pair were always twenty lengths ahead. Though two of the hurdles were hit fairly hard, the three got round very well, but Modern ran about at a couple of jumps. • Serviceable ta 7ks were allotted a large number of others, among whom were the Lowry pair. Great Charter and Doree, Wild Pigeon, In the Shade, Episode, Elysianor and Marsurd. It is understood that Otairi may start in the Maiden, being not quite forward enough for the Guineas.
