BOY BADLY BURNED
SHEET OF FLAME FROM FURNACE THREW TURPENTINE ON FIRE (Special to THE STJN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Joseph Olliver, aged 15, an employee at the Dominion Mirror and Glass Company’s works, Durham Street, received severe injuries this morning. He had been cleaning out a kerosene tin with turpentine and on opening the door of the furnace in the boiler room threw the contents of the tin into the fire. Before he had time to step back out of danger a great sheet of flame shot out from the furnace door, burning the boy’s face, chest and hands. The lad was wrapped in an overcoat and rushed to the Christchurch Hospital, where an examination revealed that his injuries were severe, and that the flames had even found their way inside his mouth.
