WOMEN TEACHERS
EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL WORK LABOUR MEMBER’S PLEA XTH.E SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter .) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Equal pay for equal work, irrespective of sex, is the principle which is strongly held by Mr. H. T. Armstrong, member for Christchurch East, who referred in the House of Representatives to-night to the position of female school teachers and the low salaries paid to them in comparison with the salaries received by their male confreres. Unanswerable cases in support of equal pay with the men had been advanced by women teachers, he said, but the reply of the Government was that it could not be done because it had never been done. This was the only reason advanced w'hy a woman teacher should not receive equal pay for equal w-ork. It would be argued that the female worker did not always give the same service as the male, but unless this was the case, equal pay was not asked, but where the qualifications were the same and the work as strenuous an equal reward for her labour should be received by a woman. At the end of 1925 there were 1,866 male teachers and 3,508 female, nearly double, yet the teachers receiving more than £4OO a year numbered 724 males and only 38 females. “Surely,” said Mr. Armstrong, “there is not so much difference as all this between men and women teachers.” CASH!
