SAILING CLUB’S PRIZE-GIVING
PT. CHEVALIER FUNCTION The Point Chevalier Sailing Club started in a very modest way, explained Mr. Ernest Davis, vice-patron of the club, at the annual prize-giving, ceremony last evening. It started in 1918, he said, when a few residents who owned boats decided to have a sweepstake. Mr. Davis traced the progress of the club from the days of its modest inception to the present day, when it had a membership of 200, and one of the finest clubhouses in the Dominion. In this connection, Mr. Davis also referred to the splendid performance of the club’s boats. Lucille, owned by Mr. Mcßae, and sailed by Mr. Potter, which had been successful in carrying off the much-prized Lipton Cup. GOOD WISHES FOR SIR THOMAS LIPTON Mr. Davis said that the donor of the cup, Sir Thomas Lipton, took a great interest in yachting in Auckland, and possessed a splendid collection of Auckland yachting photographs which had been sent to him by the Ponsonby Cruising Club. In view of the fact that Sir Thomas was shortly going to challenge for the America Cup, he suggested that the club should write and wish him success. The most important races during the year were won by the following boats: Lipton Cup, Lucille; Cargill Cup (ladies’ race), Lovelight; Spiers and Motor Bus Company’s Cups, Commodore’s Flag, and aggregate trophy, Mollie; Haliburton Johnstone Cup, MaraReferring to the impending departuse from the district of Mr. H. Empson, the retiring commodore, Mr. Davis stated that he had performed yeoman service for the club over a number of years, and that his place would indeed Ire hard to fill. On behalf of the club he asked Mr. Empson to accept a handsome silver boat, designed in the form of a shield. Mr. Empson suitably responded. Mr. F. Dyson, commodore of the club, extended a hearty welcome to a large number of members of kindred clubs and other visitors.
