GISBORNE TRY-OUTS

RACING ON THURSDAY GOSSIP FROM THE TRACK (Special to THE SUN.) GISBORNE,^ Wednesday. Although 25 or 26 outside horses were nominated for the Gisborne Racing Club meeting next week, only three have so far put in an appearance on the local track, these being Mountain Top, Jen and Gold Dot. Others, however, are due to-day from Napier. Local horses have put in good work this week, and several show promise.

Startle looks well and goes well, and should make her presence felt over a short distance. Ilapiata on present showing will be near the front in any race in which he starts. Scotch Mixture has put in good work, but an inclination to favour one leg leaves a bad impression. SMART MAIDEN Master Damon is in good form and will make the Scurry field gallop. It will be surprising if Polydorus does not catch a race during the meeting. He is going very well just now. Princess Nata has not lost her form, while Pita is not likeljr to lose his reputation for good performances at local meetings. King’s Dream yesterday looked too pretty to be really useful. Sun Yat Sen, the .Cynic youngster, shows a good turn of speed. A spell has improved Nightsong. She is in good order, and goes very fast. Polytivious has taken time to come on, but is now a greatly improved horse. WILL GO WELL Gold Dot is in splendid condition, and should stay out a mile and aquarter. Superb King shows the benefit of schooling, and should give a good account of himself. So far the jumpers have not given any impressive performances. Royal Heather jumps the country fairly well, but could shape better over the hurdles.

Since returning from Hastings Waioeka Jack has been schooled consistently. but appears to dislike the double brush, running off at his last two schoolings.

Mahia is jumping well, and Momen tous shapes well for a beginner.

Tino Maunga seta over hurdles well, but lacks condition. Carniola, always a good hurdler, gives promise ol T success next week. Sweet Heather will have to improve on Napier running to win over hurdles. A feature of the track work lately has been the number of promising two-year-olds in training. These should be well forward for the spring meeting-. HIS RETAINER Cupid has been working overtime the past few months among the jockeys of Auckland. The latest victim of the sweetened dart is the * popular rider, H. Dulieu, who yesi terday joined the ranks of the Benedicts. This rider was associated with I-loariri when he raced at Ellerslie last month, and he has also been on King Smock in the majority of his engagements. There were very few occasions when H. Dulieu failed to show up at headquarters to ride work, his energy in this direction being an object lesson to some of the more “fashionable” horsemen. The best wishes of the sporting fraternity will be extended to Mr. and Mrs. H. Dulieu.
