HAURAKI PLAINS ROAD
CONDITIONS IMPROVING The route via the Hauraki Plains from Paeroa and Thames to Auckland, which has been so troublesome to traffic lately, is now improving. Acting under the instructions of the district engineer. Public Works Department, several gangs of men haVe been busy for the last three days cutting tea-tree and making fascines to lay on the road. Where this work has been done, cars are not experiencing difficulty, and it is expected that by to-morrow evening all the worst stretches of the short mile gap of unmetalled road will have received attention. The service officer of the Auckland Automobile Association, Mr. R. E. Chamtaloup, who inspected the locality yesterday, reports enthusiastically on the efforts of the authorities to keep the way clear for traffic, and expresses the opinion that the serious damage has been caused by heavy traffic. If this class of vehicle will use the all-weather Hamilton rute in the meantime there is every possibility of the Hauraki Plains road being kept open throughout the winter. The A.A.A. is suggesting to the passenger services that in the interests of public welfare they discontinue using any vehicle heavier than tne ordinary seven-seater service car.
In spite of the improvement, the service officer does not recommend the route for inexperienced drivers or for low-set cars.
