REFEREE FOR FINAL SOCCER TEST MATCH
MR. GEORGE COX IS UNABLE TO ACT IN SATURDAY’S GAME (Special to THE SUN.) HAMILTON, To-day. Mr. George Cox, who was appointed by the New Zealand Football Association to referee the final Test match between Canada and New Zealand at Auckland on Saturday, has declined the appointment. Owing to the strenuous time Mr. Cox has had in the past 10 day® or so as secretary of the local association, in organising for the Canadians’ visit to South Auckland, he felt that he would not be able to undertake such a strenuous task, in fairness to himself and the teams. In view of the criticism made at the last meeting of the Auckland Association, which he considered quite uncalled for, Mr. Cox hesitated before declining the appointment, as it might convey the impression that this was the reason why he declined the match. However, in view of the facts already stated, he has now notified the New Zealand Council that he will be unable to act, and furthermore, in view of business engagements, he doubts if he will be able even to see the match.
