TAUMARUNUI AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS At the fortnightly meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council, Cr. G. F. Thompson raised the question of the payment of large amounts by cheque, without particulars having been given to the council. He stated that he had been asked to sign a cheque for £2 000 With an amount like that a person could go a long way before he was caught. Cr. R. B. Robb declared that it was audacity for a man like Cr. Thompson to speak as he had done. If he did not know what the cheque was for why did he sign it? The clerk, Mr. I. A. Webb, explained that the cheque was for debentures, which had to be met when they fell due. Cr. Thompson held that all accounts should come before the council, and Cr. G. S. Steadman pointed out that there was a set time for these amounts to be paid. The matter then lapsed. The 'Works Committee reported that the Wanganui River was again encroaching on the stone-crusher turntable, and it was recommended that the necessary repair work, at an estimated cost of £2O, be put in hand. It was decided to hold over for the next meeting action in regard to the application from Messrs. R. Winger, Ltd., and S. Bishara, Ltd., for licences to erect Bowser pumps. The traffic inspector, Mr. L. Oldham, stated in his report that all omnibuses had been tested, and as the proprietors were most anxious to comply with all regulations, he anticipated no difficulty with this branch of motor traffic. The health inspector reported that in defiance of instructions issued by Dr. Mercer, medical officer of health, Mr. G. F. Thompson, plumber, acting on the instructions of the owner, Mr. E. Managh, had carried out certain plumbing work in a new dwelling, and the medical officer strongly recommended that both should be prosecuted. The matter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee.
