COAL PRICES
QUESTION IN HOUSE LABOUR MEMBERS ANXIOUS (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, To-day. The possibility of dearer household coal was mentioned in the House by Mr. P. Fraser, member for Wellington Central, who addressed a question to the Minister of Industries and Com merce drawing his attention to the Westport Coal Company’s decision to raise the wholesale price of its product 2s a ton, which would result in the retail price being raised 3d a cwt.. or 5s a ton, from Monday next. Was the Minister aware, Mr. Fraser asked that there had been no increase in wages or other charges to warrant this increase, and would he prosecute immediate inquiries under the Board of Trade Act? The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, said he was unaware of the intention of the coal company, but he promised to institute inquiries and then decide what steps were considered necessary. The Minister of Mines, the Hon. G. J. Anderson. assured the House that at the present time no rise in the price of State coal was contemplated.
